The Rulings of Leftover Water (Su’r)

A small quantity of water which has been drunk from by an animal comes under four types, and it is called Su’r.

The first is that water which is pure and purifying for others whilst it has been drunken from by a person, or a horse or any animal whose meat is permissible to consume.

The second is impure water which is not permissible to do ablution with, and it is that water which has been drunk from by a dog or pig or from a predatory land animal such as a cheetah or wolf.

The third is water which is disliked to use for ablution in the presence of permissible water, and it is the remnants of water drunken from by a cat, a stray chicken, a predatory bird such as the eagle, falcon or bustard, or animals like rats but not that of a scorpion.

The fourth is water which is doubtful with respect to it purifying other things, and it is the leftover water of a mule or donkey. If no other water is present other than this, it will be permissible to do ablution and then tayammum with it and then pray.
